Angels & Demons: Pink

I know exactly what you are. The words were a slap across Liz's face. She pulled back from the cop slowly.

Staring up at him, she was suddenly on edge. "What did you say?" She whispered. Her instincts screamed for her to get away from this...man?...as quickly as possible.

"I think you heard me perfectly, darling." His voice echoed loudly in the crowded hall. Liz's head jerked up, anxious to know who overheard their exchange. She gasped at the sight.

Everything was still. People frozen mid-step. The champagne fountain had stopped flowing. The string quartet paused, bows against their instruments in soundless serenade. Only the two of them remained unfrozen.

"Child," the officer chided. "Did you really think you were the only supernatural in the city?"

Liz's mind raced. She knew there was something different about the officer but inhuman? Definitely not a vampire. She would have sensed one of her own. What...

His laughter shattered her thoughts. "Don't tell me. The great investigative reporter has never looked into the others?" He stared hard into her eyes and again erupted into bitter laughter. "You didn't know."

Williams reached for her singed hand, gently removing the glove from her tender, pink fingers. He raised the hand to his lips allowing his breath to blow lightly across her flesh, healing it instantly. Then he blinked deliberately and the room began to swirl again with noise and movement.

The officer turned his attention to the fountain which began overflowing with delicate pink bubbles. His eyes flashed solid black and the tower of champagne flutes shattered into a million pieces. For good measure, Williams summoned a waiter and compelled him to hand over his gold pocket watch, without ever uttering a single word.

"For your growing collection, my dear." The officer teased harshly. He felt the question forming in her mind.

"Am I really your first?" He asked in earnest. She inclined her head in agreement, cheeks flushed pink.

"Well, darling, allow me introduce you to your first demon." With that, he allowed the illusion to melt away and, for the first time, Liz saw him for exactly what he is...
