Random Tuesday Thoughts #3

I've always had long, thick, curly hair. It has the tendency to frizz horribly and in the battle of Jaime versus her hair, I usually lose. So I finally decided to get my hair straightened. "You'll love it! It'll be so easy! You can just roll out of bed and go." Yeah. Right. FALSE ADVERTISING.

I thought I'd get out of the shower and my hair would be stick straight. Well, it's not. It's only straight after a painful hour (sometimes more - I'm still not very good at this) of straightening my hair first with a brush and blowdryer and then with a straightening iron. And if I leave the slightest bit of moisture in my hair, it curls. I love my hair straight but I'm not sure it's worth all this freaking effort!

I'm psyched to be going to opening day. Yes, the Yankees are pigs so I won't be able to enjoy the game sitting next to my dad. Yes, there's a very good chance that my sister and I will kill each other by the end of the game if she's in one of her moods. And yes, my seats suck. But they're in the stadium. I was at the last game in the old stadium and I'll be there for the first at the new one. That's pretty damn cool so I really have no right to complain.

Speaking of complaining... it's the last day of the month so I have only a few more precious hours to bill as much as possible before they close the books on my numbers. I only have to bill 184 hours to keep myself out of trouble... Think I'll make it?

I opened the mail today and found that I've been invited to my boss' daughter's wedding. I've never met her. But I've been working for their family since I graduated from law school six years ago. (Wow - I feel old saying that) So the question is: what's the going rate for a wedding gift for someone you've never met, who makes more money than you do, when you work for the girl's dad and are still billed as the favorite law clerk of her step-mom five years later?

And let me give you a little lesson in how NOT to settle a case: DO NOT turn your case from a $3.9 million claim to a $20 million one TWO DAYS before the freaking mediation!

I'm hungry. Is it time for lunch yet?

My daughter has very curly hair...we tried the straighteners, and they seemed to just make things worse. For years we would blow dry every 4 days, with the round brush and a movie in the dvd player. It was a good hour and 20 minutes.

She has finally without chemicals managed her hair using her favorite tool...a Chi flat iron! First she blows it out, straightening a little, and then she attacks with the Chi. Less than an hour and she is done.

Moisture in the air is still evil...but there is only so much you can control!!

I sympathize!

I definitely think you should re-gift something for the wedding present. It's the new green. ;)

Candie said...

See that's the thing.I'm the contrary, they are straight so straight that nothing works on them and I've always wanted to have them curly. We are never satisfied, lol.

Wedding gift idea- Walmart gift card. ;)

Jaime said...

Kelly: hmm... maybe i'll have to get myself a chi flat iron. of course, it'll still take me a year to straighten my hair with it!

Prefers: think they'd notice if i regifted the bowl we got for our wedding? i'm sure it was expensive. they don't do anything cheap.

Candie: never! people with straight hair envy the curls. and people with the curls would do just about anything to get rid of them.

Candice: these are so NOT walmart people. they get dressed up in black tie for dinner in their own home!

Peggy said...

Black tie home dinners is exactly the reason that a, oh say, $50 Walmart card would be hilarious!

My hair is curly if I let it air dry and straight if I blow dry it so neener neener neener!

The Chi is the best straightener though and totally worth every exorbitant penny if you're that serious about "being straight".

I think the cubs will take those yanks.....;)

Jennifer said...

One, go Cubbies!
Two, I sooo envy your curly hair.
Three, I bet they have been to dozens of weddings since yours and if you give them the bowl they got you they will look at it and say "wow, what great taste!"

stoppin by to read all the randomness...I have frizzy hair and Oklahoma humidity to go along with it...
enjoy the game

Jaime said...

peggy: yeah, i guess my piece of crap ($22) straightener needs an upgrade. exactly how many pennies are we talking here?

my expressions: BLASPHEMY!

jennifer: what's with all these cubs fans invading my page?

georgie: stick around. we've got lots of random around here

Where have I been?

another baseball fan?... Who hates the Yanks.

whew.. thought I was out here on my own.

Not going to opening day, here..because *here* sucks. But I am going to watch the SD/SF game on Easter... AWESOME seats upperdeck right behind the plate.

glad I stopped by.

Theatre tickets are always good. :)

Yep! I would do the CHI. Mine was $160 bucks ~~~ sounds insane but for all the fighting and the sprays and the lotions and all the morning craziness, it is absolutely worth every penny!

And, re-gift the bowl. That would be great!

Jormengrund said...

My wife's hair is curly. If she doesn't do something with it in the mornings, it'll frizz something fierce, and look like some kind of retro throwback to the afro..

Loved the ideas..

For the wedding gift..

How about something that looks pretty, but is really quite chintzy? That would describe the person and gift all in one, wouldn't it?

I feel your pain with the hair straightening. It takes forever and it's all a pain in the butt. I still don't think it turns out as shiny and straight as the stylist gets it.

Someone said...

stopped by from the un moms blog, I feel your pain, I have the thick crazy curly hair as well, and could have used a straightening iron in high school, but I have one now and love it!!! thankfully I live in a semi desert climate so no moisture here!

Ms. Salti said...

I can't imagine how annoyed you must be after the hair fiasco. I'd sue! Get those hours billed, girl. We all need you to make money! Don't ask me why! Hope you have fun at the game.

Mike said...

Opening day at Yankee Stadium! I'm very jealous. The first Yankee game I ever went to was at Shea stadium, because Yankee Stadium itself was being remodeled. I think that was about 1974. I barely remember it.

Jaime said...

wendy: glad you stopped by too. but in the interest of full disclosure: hate the owners, love the team.

green jello: thanks for the ideas!

swoozie: guess i have some online shopping to do tonight. if everyone's plugging this thing, you ALL wouldn't steer me wrong

jor: that's why my hair is long. when it's short, i have a total fro

blueviolet: why is it that we can never recreate the look they give us in the salon?

melanie: lucky! plenty of humidity here in jersey to go around

ms s: thanks! i didn't realize i had my own personal cheerleader. :) billed 13 hours more than i had to - 8 hours less than i should have...

otin: i'll blog all about it - you'll feel like you were there. and you can save the bucks not buying a $10 beer and a $9 dog

Elle said...

First things first...Go Red Sox!!

Okay, I feel better now. I have curly hair and just go with it. I think I look horrible with straight hair and it certainly makes life easier.

I'm sure you can't go with the Walmart gift card, maybe they are registered somewhere. Good luck.

Thanks for stopping by our blog today~

Ah, the hair issues. I'd give you a hug, but our curly locks would probably intertwine and we'd be stuck there cursing each other. I just got my hair cut and drastically thinned out, but now I feel it looks like I'm trying to grow out a mullet. Sigh. We're just not going to win this.

Bex said...

i'd say a wedding gift for someone you don't know should be in the $35-$50 range.

good luck with your hair!

Keely said...

I second (or is that third, or fourth?) the vote for the Chi. Best money spent ever. You can get them on ebay pretty reasonably I think.

And I'm *always* at a loss for what to get someone I don't really know as a wedding present. Is there a registry??

Captain Dumbass said...

I shave my head once a week. No frizz.

Jacquie said...

I feel your pain, I have super wavy/frizzy hair now, I tend to just keep it up in a ponytail or bun I have found it easier.

Anonymous said...

I also loose the battle with my hair. I've kind of given up and it's been pulled back into a lame ponytail everyday for a week now (glad I work from home...).

I also have to make billable hours. Maybe someday I'll do better and the end of the month won't suck quite so much.

Love your blog.

Mrsupole said...

Okay Jamie, I am going to tell you something different to straigten your hair. Have you ever heard of the Maxi Glide for your hair. It is like a flat Iron but with a blush. My granddaughter and I who have very, very curly hair use that. Go online and look it up. Anyone who uses this does not want to go back to a flat iron. This is so much easier and in less than 20 minutes your hair will be flat as a pancake. It does cost about 80 dollars and is worth every penny. It is those little brushes in the flat iron that pull your hair tight while it is being ironed and you will be so glad. I wish you could borrow mine just one time and you would see what I mean.

Anyway I have a free gift for you at my website and for everyone else too. It is not a meme, it is not an award you can pass on it is a gift just for all of you. I hope you all like it.

Oh and find out where the daughter is registered and pick a gift that is in the middle of the costs if you can afford it. You do not want to look too cheap and you do not want to look like you are sucking up to the boss. Or see if a group of them are pooling their money together to get a big gift. But it needs to be BIG. Good luck.

God bless.

Mrsbear said...

I'm terrible at gift buying, especially for someone you don't even know. Is there anything affordable on the registry, maybe a designer egg timer or a Gucci oven mitt.

I've always had limp, straight hair, growing up I would have killed for curls.

Jaime said...

Elle: I can't BELIEVE you're rooting for the red sox on my blog! but since i enjoy your blog, i'll let it slide!

Sprite: That would be a hysterical site if our hair did lock together in a massive multi-headed frizz.

Bex: Thanks for the advice. I'm glad that I solicited everyone's opinion on this!

Keely: The usual stuff from macys. But there's actually a really cool registry for their honeymoon at disney. I may hit that but have no idea how much to spend

Captain: Yes, I know. Hubby tells me this all the time... "It's good to be a guy."

Angel: That's why I got my hair straightened - I was tired of the bun/ponytail.

K: billable hours will ALWAYS suck

Mrs U: thanks for the advice...on my hair and the gift. i was also thinking that i really can't look cheap to my boss... not sure where that leaves me though

Mrs Bear: I have trouble with gift giving too. Plus in Jersey, we usually don't do gifts - envelopes full of cash are pretty much standard at our weddings.

Casey said...

I fell for that hair straightening trick too, it sucks. They made me feel like I was going to have straight, luxurious hair and it was still frizzy the next day. Damn.

My mom's bosses all sent me gifts for my wedding but I didn't invite them. I don't get into that "invite everyone under the sun since it's socially expected" thing. I did get free gifts out of it though. Does this chick have a registry?
